Abstract

Parameters estimation of induction motors continues to be important area of research because it is used in many practical engineering problems. In particular, the motor parameters inevitably vary during the drive operation, making it desirable to improve the performance of the drive by tracking the parameter variation online.
In this thesis, the effect of parameter variation on the performance of three phase induction motor is presented. Mathematical dynamic model of an induction motor fed from constant current as influenced by magnetic circuit saturation is developed. In this model the actual value of the magnetizing inductance is determined by taking into account the magnetic circuit saturation as measured in the laboratory. Moreover, the skin-effect is modeled as variable parameters in the rotor side of squirrel-cage induction motor model when fed from constant voltage source. Digital simulations are carried out in order to investigate how the transient and steady-state performances are influenced by magnetic circuit saturation and skin-effect. The present results demonstrate that any kind of partial view and simplification in the induction motor model may lead to unpredictable errors in the final results.
