Abstract Keeping every one safe is a serious responsibilit nurses remain in a unique and challenging position in preventing and managing psychiatric inpatients’ violence. The necessity of designing violence management programme adjusted to special needs of ’ the target group and target setting was recently stressed. Therefore, this study aimed at identifying the impact of a nursing educhional program for management of violent psychiatric patients on nurses’ knowledge and practice. A quasi-experimental design was used. The study was conducted at Port-Said Psychiatric Hospital which is affiliated to Ministry of health, The study .involvcd all nurses working in this hospital (41 nurses.}. The data was collected through. a quastionnaire to assess the nurses’ knowledge, observational checklists to assess nursing practice regarding verbal de-escalation of aggression, safety measures , seclusion and restrain, as well as overt aggression scale to assess the aggressive incidents, The data was collected before, immediately after and after three months program implementation to ascertain its’ impact on nurses’ knowledge, practice and 1he aggressive incidents itself. The results of this. study revealed that, there is a positive impact of the educational program for management of violent patients on the nurses’ satisfactory total score of knowledge about psychiatric patients’ aggression an adequate practice of restraint procedure, verbal de-escalation of aggression and safety measures in addition to a decrease in aggressive incidents’ duration and inappropriate nursing interaction as a cause of aggressive incidents. |
