Abstract

The present experimental and theoretical study is dealing with the effect of varying the design and operating conditions on the performance of a recovery pumping system handling water hyacinth.
The experimental study deals with the effect of varying the operating parameters on the performance of a recovery pumping system handling water hyacinth. Pump suction inclination angle, water height above pump inlet, inlet suction cone diameter, pump flow rate, number of cutter blades, cutter speed, pump intake suction cone length, water hyacinth concentration and impeller type are the operating parameters considered in the present study. Experiments results are presented for water hyacinth recovery rate, the effectiveness of recovery pumping system and the water hyacinth volume reduction. Within the operating range of the considered parameters, the obtained results show that, the Nile water hyacinth recovery rate increases with the increase of pump suction cone inlet diameter pump flow rate, number of cutter blades, water hyacinth concentration, and pump intake suction cone. Moreover, the Nile water hyacinth recovery rate decreases with the increases of the inclination angle of the centerline of the pump suction cone with respect to the vertical plane. The effect of varying height above the pump suction cone inlet (submergence height ratio) on the water hyacinth recovery rate and the effectiveness of recovery pumping system depend on the range of this height ratio. The effectiveness of recovery pumping system increases with increases pump intake suction cone, pump suction cone inlet diameter and it decreases with the increases of the inclination angle of the centerline of the pump suction cone with respect to the vertical plane. As cutter speed, cutter blade number, pump intake suction cone diameter and flow rate ratio increase, the reduction in water hyacinth volume increases The effect of impeller type on the performance of water hyacinth recovery system depending on the other operating condition and it’s found that using double channel impeller instead of vortex or semi¬open is more effective and more economic. In Addition, empirical correlations are deduced to describe the Nile water hyacinth recovery rate and the effectiveness of recovery pumping system as function in operating parameters, using the obtained experimental data
Finally, research effort has been directed towards the modeling of the two-phase pump characteristics to verify and modify a procedure for prediction the performance centrifugal’ pumps handling soft slurries. The different methods for evaluating these types of loss have been reviewed and a mathematical model has been suggested in order to evaluate head and efficiency of the pump at any operating point. Furthermore, the performance of a centrifugal pump pumping two phase flow is determined experimentally to verify the suggested model. A comparison between experimental and prediction results show a good agreement.
