Abstract This study was a quasi-experimental study, aimed to improve psychosocial adjustment of children with asthma through, identifying the psychosocial problems of children with asthma, assessing psychosocial adjustment of children with asthma, designing psychosocial nursing intervention for children with asthma based on their actual psychological problems, implementing and evaluating the effect of psychosocial nursing intervention on the adjustment patterns of children with asthma. The study was conducted at the Out Patient Chest Clinic of Pediatric University Hospital, affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. The study involved all available school age children with asthma (80) attending the previously mentioned setting regardless their characteristics for 6 months period. Tools of the study involved anxiety scale to assess anxiety of children with asthma, questionnaires by interviewing, to assess psychosocial adjustment patterns of children with asthma, and children’s knowledge about asthma. These tools were used twice pre and post intervention program. The main results showed that, the psychosocial intervention program was effective in improving adjustment patterns of school age children with asthma. This study recommended that, continuous health educational programs should be provided for asthmatic children and their caregivers about asthma and how to cope with its stressors, emphasizing on early detection of psychosocial problems of school age children and their care givers regarding asthma. |
