Abstract

Laboratory diagnosis is an important part in diagnosis of parasitic diseases. Microscopy is the corner stone for diagnosis of all major intestinal helminthes infections. Culture is the complex process by which cells are grown under controlled conditions. The culture technique is simple, easily available, usually needs inexpensive chemicals, and is the gold standard for the diagnosis of some diseases as trichomoniasis. Immunodiagnostic methods can serve as useful tools for the diagnosis of some parasitic diseases especially those characterized either by larval migration through host tissue (Toxocara spp. and Schistosoma spp.), by encystations (Toxoplasma gondii) or inter-/intracellular residence (Leishmania spp. and Trypanosoma cruzi). They are more sensitive and specific than microscopy. Molecular diagnostic tools, in spite of their higher cost and the requirement for specialty laboratories, permit the detection of infections from very low parasitized samples including those from asymptomatic patient’s samples. All proteomics-based diagnostic techniques seek to identify biomarkers that present alone or in combination in serum and other body fluids. The developments of automated, high-throughput proteomic technologies such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization, time-of-flight (SELDI-TOF) has enabled large numbers of clinical samples to be analyzed simultaneously in a short time.
