Abstract

from this work it can be concluded that insecticides used for the control of ectoparasites of poultry must be safe for the birds as well as man. To achieve this, such insecticides which proved effective in low concentrations and at the same time possess long residual activity should be cjosen, so that when used in the control of lice or ticks, they can be applied very early before the birds are marketed, i.e. that these insecticides can be applied in the pens before stocking them with the birds and repeated after stocking after 6 weeks. By the time the birds are marketed, there would be no traces of the insecticides on the birds before it is put on the table.
In using insecticides for birds, it is advisable to dilute them with water as it was found to be more effective than in case of dust form, paying attention to the choice of good climatic conditions (avoid severe cold days).
As the insecticides of choice was Lindane, the gamma-isomer of BHC of the hydrocarbon group. Those of organophosphorous compounds and carbamates (e.g.) Sevin, are inhibitors of the cholinestrase enzyme.
