Abstract

Although many authors had studied the effect of aging process on dentin structure, the majority of them concerned with the changes in its mechanical properties and its inorganic components.
Only few studies had investigated the radio-density of dentin by age and almost none of them compared between the histological age changes of mantle and circumpulpal dentin at different crown locations.
The present study aimed to investigate the effect of aging process on the histological structure of both mantle and circumpulpal dentin.
Eighty sound human permenant teeth were utilized in this study and divided into four groups (20 teeth in each group)
Group 1: teeth from patients aged between 10-25 yrs.
Group 2: teeth from patients aged between 26-40 yrs.
Group 3: teeth from patients aged between 41-55 yrs.
Group 4: teeth from patients aged between 56-70 yrs.
Five teeth from each group were cut longitudinally to 3mm thickness to measure the radiographic density of mantle and circumpulpal dentin in occlusal, middle as well as cervical crown region using. Aluminium step wedge and Digora program for windows (version 2.5), were used to analyze the radiographic density.
Sixty teeth were fixed and processed for histological examination of both ground and decalcified sections (H&E stain), and examined by transmitted light microscope.
