Abstract

Background: Dendritic cells (DC) are unique professional antigen presenting cells that coordinate both innate and adaptive arms of the immune system .
Objectives: to evaluate the effect of chronic renal failure and renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis) on circulating dendritic cells.
Methods : Fifteen CRF patients on conservative treatment (Group I), and another15 patients on regular hemodialysis (Group II)) were compared to 15 age and sex matched healthy children. Besides clinical evaluation and routine laboratory investigations of CRF, dendritic cells were measured using flowcytometry .
Results: revealed that dendritic cells are decreased among (group 1) and (11) with CKD in comparison with the control group, in our results we found that the group (11) on regular hemodialysis are affected more than group (1) on conservative management regarding the decrease in dendritic cell count where we found that DCs cell count were lowest among hemodialysis patients.
Conclusion: we found that there is significant effect of the uremic state on the number of circulating Dendritic cells where it was at lowest level among group of patients on regular HD and those on conservative management had a slightly higher level but still lower than control group, our findings may provide an additional explanation for the immunodeficiency among CKD patients.
