Abstract A new cleaning and grading system consists of specific gravity separator and two cleaning units was developed and tested to evaluate the performance of cleaning and grading anise and caraway seeds and their associated foreign matter. The operating variables were oscillation speeds of 300, 320, 340 and 360 rpm, lateral slopes of 1, 3, 4 and 6 degrees, separation surfaces made of woven wire 47 and 325 mesh, air velocities of 1.31, 1.42 and 1.53 m/s for anise seeds and 1, 1.22 and 1.53 m/s for caraway seeds. The evaluationwas based on the following parameters: cleanliness, MOG (Material Other than Grain) rejected, seed loss, separating efficiency, effectiveness, seed distribution, MOG distribution, period of time and thousand seed weight in each outlet opening of the gravity separator. The maximum cleanliness, MOG rejected and machine effectiveness obtained were 98.39, 98.54 and 98.4 % for anise seeds and 99.07, 95.95 and 95.82% for caraway seeds respectively. For anise seeds the best operating conditions were at air velocity of 1.31 m/s, lateral slope of 4 degrees, oscillation speed of 320 rpm and woven wire surface (325 mesh). For caraway seeds the best operating conditions were at air velocity of 1 m/s, lateral slope of 3 degrees, oscillation speed of 340 rpm and woven wire surface (325 mesh) CHAPTER ΙΙΙ MATERIALS AND METHODS 1-Materials |
