Abstract
This is a comparative study of selected novels by two contemporary writers: Anita Desai, from India, and Margaret Laurence, from Canada, with the intention of revealing the interaction between the socio-cultural and psychological aspects of the two writers’ societies and their novels. The selected novels are Desai’s Cry the Peacock (1963), where Shall We Go this Summer (1975) and In Custody (1984) and Laurence’s The Stone Angel (1964), The Fire-Dwellers (1969) and The Diviners (1974).
Although India and Canada are separated by space, time and culture, they are both characterized by racial, cultural, social and linguistic distinction. These divisions have helped in the emergence of different psychological dilemmas - anxiety, frustration, disharmony, self-hate, disconnection and alienation - of both Indian and Canadian individuals. Thus, a study of the selected novels by Desai and Laurence is important as both writers deal with the same themes which symbolize the concerns of modern man in both societies.
