Abstract

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells due to damage of DNA (mutations).
Broadly, most chemotherapeutic drugs work by impairing mitosis (cell division), effectively targeting fast-dividing cells. As these drugs cause damage to cells they are termed cytotoxic. The majority of chemotherapeutic drugs can be divided into; alkylating agents (e.g., cisplatin), antimetabolites (e.g., methotrexate), anthracyclines, plant alkaloids (e.g., vinca alkaloid), topoisomerase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies (e.g., ritoximab), All of these drugs affect cell division or DNA synthesis and function in some way (Tannock et al., 2004) (1).
