Abstract

Composite columns are part of composite structures, which are widely used
in the last few decades in the construction of tall buildings to achieve long spans,
lower storey heights and provide additional lateral stiffness. One such system
employs composite columns that consist of steel sections encased in concrete.
This system combines the rigidity and formability of reinforced concrete with
the strength and speed of construction associated with structural steel to produce
an economic structure. The concrete used for encasing a structural steel section
not only increases its strength and stiffness, but also protects it from fire damage.
In this study a comprehensive investigation has been conducted to study the
behavior of steel encased in concrete composite columns. Finite Element model
has been used and verified with other experimental works. A good agreement
was achieved by comparing the analytical results with the experimental works
conducted by other authors. Many factors has been taken into consideration such
as properties of materials, dimensions of column and type of loading. A
comparison has been made with the conducted models and with Egyptian Code
of Practice (ECP) and good results were found and some recommendations were
suggested to take into consideration when designing a composite column to
achieve a proper design of steel encased in concrete composite columns.
