Abstract

For structural systems such as offshore platforms, there are usually two critical design criteria, strength capacity and integrity. The first is essentially depending upon the amount of material loss due to surface or general corrosion; although it may be affected by localized corrosion. The second criterion is concerned with pitting corrosion. Therefore the design of corrosion control system is essential.
In view of the electrochemical nature of corrosion, it would seem logical for an electrochemical method such as cathodic protection (CP) to be derived to control or prevent it. Therefore, this work is concerned with the design of CP systems for fixed offshore platforms (e.g. jack-up and jacket).
In this thesis, the design of the two (CP) systems, the sacrificial anode & the impressed current for offshore structures, is developed using the computer programming language (C++) to simplify the design procedure.
A model KT-joint of a jack-up rig is idealized to explore the effect of uniform corrosion (material loss) of steel and welding material on the structure capacity over the structure service life.
