Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a proposed nursing management on prevention/minimizing tube feeding complications. Material and methods: a quasi-experimental research design was utilized during June 2007 to March 2008. Total sixty adult enterally fed patients from critical care units of Menoufiya University Hospital ; the investigator used three tools to collect the necessary data. A) Interviewing Questionnaire Sheet including biosociodemographic characteristics, medical data sheet, nutritional assessment sheet, b)observational checklist of tube feeding Complications, c) and Glasgow Coma Scale. Results: revealed that (66.7%) were males, (60%) aged 45 years and more. Cerebrovascular stroke (C.V.S) was the main diagnosis, (86.6%) had moderate level of impaired consciousness. There were statistical significant differences in relation to sodium and potassium on discharge. As regard to vital signs there was statistical significant difference on admission in relation to temperature, pulse and respiration. On fifth day of admission to pulse and on discharge in relation to pulse, respiration and blood pressure. As regard to complications (6.7%) developed abdominal cramp, (6.7%) developed hypernatermia, In relation to tube connection time/days and length of hospital stay a high significant statistical difference was found p 0.001 and.
