Abstract

The extensive use of electric appliances was raised a question about its side effects on human health, and has been accompanied about adverse and bad effects on human health from various electromagnetic radiation sources.
Many studies were published all over the world discussed these side effects of electromagnetic fields related to different electric usage, but we didn’t get a confirm and a clear evidence or a negative sign about the relation between several diseases and electromagnetic radiation sources especially cancer, leukemia, skull, eye tissue, skin and heart.
Many scientists stressed that electromagnetic thermal effects leads to raise human’s temperature about 1oC and human nature adapted it, but about non-thermal effects, there are several suspensions about its adverse effects.
Many countries all over the world have to adequate safety regulations to protect their communities and humans from bad effects of widely usage of electric appliances.
The research focused on measuring the electromagnetic radiated power that represented a hazard biological effect on human because of exposure to several electromagnetic sources. It also depends on measuring the actual and very electromagnetic radiations and its radiated power over selected areas of Great Cairo.
These selected areas represent different attitudes e.g. down town, new urban communities, ring road and high ways. Measurements were taken at different days moreover, different times (day and night; working and off days).
Different measurements have been taken and the average level in this band was about -21dBm. This level increases as the spectrum analyzer become closer to the base station.
The measurement taken from a distance 300m away from the base station and the tower height was 30m. Therefore, different level of transmission could be measured depending upon how far the analyzer away from the base station.
The second category of measuring the GSM radiation is to study the mobile radiation itself. It has been shown that the radiation from the mobile increases on the highway since the mobile becomes away from the base station.
The power control signal of the GSM system controls the radiated power from the mobile and increases it as long as the mobile gets away from the base station.
Two power levels from the mobile are measured, the position of the mobile, which is measured by the GPS, shows that the output signals from the mobile increases as the mobile move away from the base station.
The measurement proves that the radiation from the mobile increases on the highway since the mobile becomes away from the base station. In this case, the control signals of the GSM systems control the radiated power from the mobiles and increase their level to make a good connection link with the base station.
The measured power level was about 28 dBm, which is approximately equals 0.5 watt, which is very close to the human’s brain. This level of signal is very dangerous since it is too high.
Other measurements were taken over the frequency range up to 2.5 GHz. This measurement gives an idea about the overall effect of radiation over this frequency band.
The levels of radiation vary from -10.3 dBm up to -8.6 dBm and -4.7 dBm, depending upon which kind of different transmission system is pivoting at certain location.
Several recommended solutions were discussed to reduce the electromagnetic radiation effects by using specific materials to shield rooms also it’s recommended to use certain paints which can isolate ceilings and inner and outer building to reduce these radiations about 30dB.
This research represents a trial to have a global look for different kinds of electromagnetic sources which human were exposed during their daily life in and outdoors; and they deal with it without any precautions or restrictions.
The research aim to clarify the adverse effects of using mobile phone especially while driving on mail and high ways.
In addition, it represents a start to make an electromagnetic radiation map for Great Cairo; in order to support decision maker to take action against random activities, which be careless about the adverse effects of EMF on humans, so it have to put in consideration the environmental impact assessment of projects that produces electromagnetic radiations.
