Abstract The present study was undertaken at the Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University, to study the effect of recurrent selection on the itnproveuient of yiela and other characters in oabbage. Correlation coefficient values were also determined for pairs of ten characters of this crop. The source material for the present study consisted of commercial seed of an open—pollinated cultivar namely, “Kahira—Hageen”. The best 42 plants were visually selected and top—crossed to “El—Baladi” cultivar, as a broad gene base tester. On the basis of top—cross performance, the highest yielding 12 S lines were selected for interorossing and seed production of’ the one cycle population used in the present study, These were also the lines whose top—crosses were superior in head—compactness, absence o± purple colour and earliness of maturity. The source and first cycle populations were compared for yield and other important characters in August planting, 1972. |
