Abstract

Two field experiments were conducted in Sakha Resarch Station, Kafr-El-Sheikh Gavernorate, Agricultural Research Center (ARC) during 2005/2006 and 2008/2009 growing seasons to investigate the effect of pre-sowing chemical seed treatments on the response of three sugar beet varieties.
Each experiment included 27 treatments which were the combinations between three sugar beet varieties (Samba, Pleno and Sofi) and nine soaking treatments. The investigated soaking treatments were as follows:-
T1: Dry seeds as a control treatment.
T2: Seeds soaked in water for 24 hours.
T3: Seeds soaked in full Hoagland’s solution for 24 hours.
T4: Seeds soaked in 50 % Hoagland’s solution for 24 hours.
T5: Seeds soaked in 25 % Hoagland’s solution for 24 hours.
T6: Seeds soaked in 1000 ppm. GA3 solution for 24 hours.
T7: T3+T6.
T8: T4+T6.
T9: T5+T6.
The treatments were arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Varieties were allocated in the main plots and the soaking treatments were assigned at random within the sub-plots. Plot area was 14m2 consisted of four ridges 7 m in length and 2 m in width and the space between ridges was 50 cm and between hills was 20 cm.
