Abstract

Objectives :
To establish the validity and reproducibility of the computer-assisted densitometric image analysis in evaluation of mandibular fracture.

To evaluate the possible existence of differences in the mandibular fracture repair using computer-assisted densitometric image analysis depending on the type of treatment.
Patients &Methods :
Twenty male Patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department-kobri El Koba Military Hospital and from the outpatient clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department-Faculty of Dentistry, Suez Canal University, their ages ranged from 20 to 40 years, mean age 32.5 years
The twenty patients were divided into 2 equal groups:
group A: patients treated using 2.0mm miniplate with conventional screw.
group B: patients treated using 2.0mm miniplate with locking head screw.
Fractures were treated 24 to 48 hours after the incidence of injury.
For the evaluation of bone healing, the quantitative radiodensitometry will be used to analyze the changes in optic bone density occurring at and around the fracture line (according to magnification of each radiograph) using Digora system.
Post-operative follows up:
The patients were examined radiographically at 15, 30, 90 days
Radiographic examination:
Five panoramic radiographs were performed on each patient, preoperative, immediately postoperatively, at 15, 30 and 90 days.
All of these radiographs were made with the same orthopantomograph.
Results :
The results of T-test performed on the mean density values recorded in each follow-up period using both lines of treatment revealed a non significant difference between both groups after fifteen days, while a significant difference was noted after one month, two months and three months.
It could be noticed that increase in bone density was detected on group B with locked head screw than on group A with conventional screw between one month, two months and three months.
