Abstract

Fluorescent solar concentrators (FSCs) play an important role in solar energy conversion. Despite their potential for generating low-cost solar power, FSC development faces munerous challenges; the majority of which are related to the luminescent materials used in their design. Recently, we have proposed a novel method to enhance the fluorescence and photo-stability of dyes which is essential for commercial feasibility of any solar technology.
This thesis is concerned with study the spectroscopic and optical properties of three organic dyes in liquid and solid matrix, before and after solar and UV irradiations. The fluorescence and the photo-stability of our testing dyes are enhanced after the addition of silver NPs. This enhancement is due to interactions of surface plasmon of silver NPs with fluorescent species. Also, the effect of addition of the silver NPs on the mechanical properties of polymers is investigated which resulted in a significant increase in both ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) due to the change of microstructures. Chapter One: outlines background information about photons, fluorescence,
photon interaction with matter, nanotechnology, polymers, fluorescent solar concentrators, the main requirements of FSC materials, efficiency of fluorescent solar concentrators and advanced FSC techniques.
