Abstract This thesis studies the performance enhancement of gas turbine power plants by cooling the air at plant intake. An introduction to gas turbines is included, it describes the types of gas turbines, its main components, working principle and the effect of ambient temperature on its performance parameters; the reason of using the inlet air cooling technologies, its types, advantages and disadvantages and its effect on performance enhancement are included In the introduction. A literature survey is included to show the available studies in this field. The evaporative coolers design equations, design calculations and selection procedure are included; a cooler effectiveness of 0.94 is selected. A siemens 250 MW gas turbine (V94.3A) is selected to be the case study, the performance parameters enhancement with inlet air cooling is simulated and the results are tabulated. The climatic and economic data are collected and used to predict the income of the system (its annual profit and payback period), at some ambient conditions (20% relative humidity and 47°C air temperature) the power increase with inlet cooling reached 46 MW with 25% increase, the gas turbine efficiency increased by 2% with 5.6 % increase percent. Two calculation methods were used to make the economic study and showed that the annual profit will be around 3.6 million L.E and the payback period will be around 2.6 years. The operation and maintenance considerations are included and a computer software program is constructed using visual basic.net to make the necessary performance and economic calculations, all data and results are tabulated in appendices. |
