Abstract

Ferrocement in filled concrete columns were developed with high strength, better deformation characteristics, crack control and high ductility and energy absorption properties could be used in structural applications with technical advantages. Three shapes of columns were proposed such as square, circular and rectangular columns which reinforced with various types of reinforcement materials. The application of the developed specimens is proposed as an alternative to conventional reinforcement concrete columns.
Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to examine the effectiveness of using these new types of columns. The parameters investigated are the thickness of the ferrocement layers, steel reinforcement type, volume fraction and specific surface area of steel reinforcement, and the cross sectional shape of the specimens. The effect of these parameters on the behavior of the proposed elements in terms of first crack loads, maximum loads, mid-span deflections for flexural specimens, and the maximum loads and contractions for axial compression specimens are reported.
A total of thirty five specimens were produced and tested. The dimensions of the square hollow section were 150 mm out side length and 100 mm inside length. The dimensions of the square hollow core were 150 side length and 90 mm diameter of circular core. The dimensions of hollow circular test specimens were 140 mm diameter of outer diameter and 90 mm inside diameter. All test specimens were produced having length of 1000 mm.Twenty one specimens were cast and tested subjected to central line loadings, which represent the action of lateral loading as the action of earthquake.
