Diabetes mellitus is a disease defined by abnormalities of fasting or postprandial glucose and is characterized by autoimmune
destruction of pancreatic islet beta cells. Both genetic susceptibility and environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis .Autoimmune thyroid disorders are the most common
immunological disorders in patients with type I diabetes. The aim of this study was to: 1. Detect the frequency of thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid
dysfunction in patients with type I diabetes. 2. Study possible epidemiologic risk factors, including age, sex and duration of diabetes. This work was carried on 2 groups: Diabetic group (group I): included (60) diabetic patients, [(24) males and (36) females] and their age was ranging between
(1 – 18) years with mean (10.7 ± 4.2) years, duration of diabetes
was ranging between (15 days - 9 years) with mean (2.16 ± 2.13)
years. Eight patients had goiter on examination.
