Abstract

Hyperbilirubinemia is a common and, in most cases benign problem in
newborns, jaundice is observed in 1st week of life in approximately 60% of
full term and 80% of preterm newborn.
-Hyperbilirubinemia assessment is the most important factor when managing
neonatal jaundice .
- Transcutanous bilirubin measurement is a screening test for identifying the
need for total serum bilirubin measurement in order to reduce the number of
blood sampling and for follow up of jaundiced newborn
- It is an objective ,non invasive technique which reduce in health costs
,provide real time results and avoid pain and local infection.
-Hence the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of transcutanous
non invasive method in assessment and prediction of neonatal
hyperbilirubinemia using Bilichek jaundice meter in full term with
gestational ages more than 37 week and weight ranged from 2500gm -
4500gm
The present study was conducted on 110 full term newborn borne at shebeen
el koom teaching hospital in the period from January 2010 to June 2010. 10
newborn were excluded (4 cases lost of serum sampling, 5 cases lost of
follow up and 1 case lose of bilical of Bilichek). transcutanous measurement
(done by using Bilichek jaundice meter) were done immediately before or
within 60 mintues after blood sampling for serum bilirubin concentration
measurement in 1st day , 3rd day and 7th day
