Abstract

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) refers to a group of respiratory conditions that are exacerbated during sleep. SDB is increasingly being recognized as an important disease entity, and if the condition is left untreated, significant morbidity and even mortality can result. The most prominent SDB condition in children is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which belongs to the severe end of a spectrum, ranging in severity from primary or simple snoring through upper airway resistance syndrome, obstructive hypopnea syndrome, to its most severe form OSA.The American Thoracic Society defines childhood OSA as adisorder that is characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep that result in disruption of normal ventilation and sleep patterns.Children with SDB are exposed to several complications including neurocognitive abnormalities, cardiovascular abnormalities, insulin resistance and growth failure. The aim of this work is to assess cardiovascular abnormalities in children with SDB, inflammatory response to the causative factors and relation of inflammatory response to cardiovascular affection.
