Abstract
Throughout history man has been polluting his environment. The rapidly growing population, concentrated in urban areas has made pollution a critical problern’{’. Indeed, with the rapid growth of population, rates and amounts of solid waste are increasing.
Solid waste is a problem precisely because its material is not wanted by the producer, who, of course seeks to dispose it at lowest possible cost. It is the task of society to ensure that disposal is carried out in such a way that it does not seriously damage the environment. One approach is to recover and reuse as much as possible the waste, thereby reducing both the quantity to be disposed and the demand for limited raw materials. Another approach, which should be applied concurrently, is to improve the technology for collecting and disposing of the wastev”, The choice of the appropriate method of solid waste disposal depends on many factors, the most important of them are public health requirement and the economic situation”. Generally, the improper handling of solid wastes results in several environmental risks such as soil, water and air pollution. Contamination of underground water is another serious problem from leachate of dumping areas. Flies and rodents find a breeding environment in such untreated wastes. Open dumps are one of these objectionable systems. Even in sanitary landfill, it is difficult to control odours and rodents. In addition, sites available for landfill disposal have become scarce. Burning in specially constructed incinerators is not only expensive, but may create air pollution problems’T”.
