Abstract The rise in childhood obesity is acknowledged as a major health problem in many countries, No single strategy is likely to be effective in reversing this alarming trend; rather, nurses need to work with children and families by providing education, guidance, and support to promote achange in the many lifestyle factors that have helped to create this health problem.Child’s growth is influenced by heredity, nutrition, and environmental factors, as well as physical and psychological factors.Body weight is regulated by a feedback loop in which peripheral signals report nutritional information to an integratory centre in the brain.Obesity is a chronic disorder that has multiple causes. Childhood obesity is a risk factor for adult morbidity and mortality as cardiovascular and digestive diseases in adulthood as compared with those who are lean. There is no doubt that both over-consumption of calories and reduced physical activity are major determinants of childhood obesity.Skipping breakfast may also be related to dieting and disordered eating habits even in children. It is clear that genetics is modulated by the environment, and this interaction is responsible for the development of childhood obesity.Among the environmental factors, diet during pregnancy, breastfeeding, birth weight and size of the child, low level of physical activity, excessenergy intake during childhood and adolescence, and exposure to TV advertising have shown convincing evidence in their influence on the onset of child obesity. |
