Abstract
Chronic liver disease is a major public health problem worldwide. It is a leading cause of excess morbidity and mortality. In this study, a cross-sectional study was done (n = 307) followed by nested case-control study (n of cases = 96, n of controls = 211), aiming to detect the percentage of CLD and to discover the different risk factors. A predesigned questionnaire was traced. Physical examination was also done. In addition, Ultrasonography and laboratory investigations including; stool examination, liver function tests, serological tests for HBV and HCV infections were performed. We concluded that hepatotropic viral infections (HBV and HCV), either alone or in combination as well as the positive history of drugs as prominant risk factors for occurrence of CLD among the studied group
