Abstract

Temporal processing which is one of central auditory processing abilities is described as the auditory mechanisms and processes responsible for the following behavioral phenomena: temporal resolution, temporal ordering, temporal integration and temporal masking (ASHA, 1996 and 2005). Management of central auditory processing disorder is based mainly on three lines, direct skill remediation for the affected abilities, use of compensatory strategies and acoustic modification of the listening conditions (Bellis, 1996 and ASHA, 2005).
The objective of the current study was to develop a computer-based training program for remediation of auditory temporal processing disorder (ATPD). The development computer-based training program consisted of two games for discrimination and sequencing of two or three tones of different frequencies. The program was standardized on 20 normal Arabic-speaking children and age-appropriate normative data in terms of Temporal order Threshold (TOT) were obtained. Age proved to be an important factor that influences the performance of normal children.
The developed program was applied on 20 children with auditory temporal processing disorder. Study group showed generalized improvement in different central auditory processing abilities other than the targeted auditory temporal processing abilities. The neuroplastic changes following remediation was documented by changes in electrophysiological measures. There was also improvement in the educational and language abilities. Age, gender and auditory subprofile had no effect on the outcome of remediation. On the other hand, compromised auditory temporal ability and children performance prior to remediation affected the remediation outcome.
It has to be stated that children with temporal resolution deficit are the appropriate candidate for training by game I at 40,60 ms stimulus duration. Group of children with temporal ordering and temporal integration deficits were the candidate for training with game I at 40 & 25 msec. stimulus duration followed by game II. Children with pan temporal deficit were candidate for training with game I at 60, 40 & 25 msec. stimulus duration followed by game II.
The critical finding from the present study is that, improvement in central auditory skills and neural changes along auditory pathway as well as phonological awareness tests were valid even after stopping of the program. The newly developed computer-based program for training of ATPD can be viewed as an effective and promising auditory training strategy.
