Abstract

This study was carried out on 682 serum samples and 45 urine samples collected from dairy cattle. 60 serum samples from cows suffering from abortion at late stage of pregnancy , 56 serum samples from cows suffering from bloody milk and 566 serum samples from apparently normal cows. Samples were collected from three governorates , Al- Sharkeya(508), Al-Giza (89) and Al-Fayoum (85).serum samples were examined by MAT against leptospirosis and found that the Seropositivity was 33.4% at dilution of 1:100 and the more prevalent serovars were L.interrogans Serovars Icterohaemorrhagiae(18.2%), Grippotyphosa (15%) then Australis (13.5%) and Canicola (2.5%) respectively. Samples from aborted cows were screened against brucellosis using RBPAT and they were negative while when examined against leptospirosis using MAT found that 48.3% were positive at titer of 1:100 and more and the more prevalent Serovars were L.interrogans Serovars Grippotyphosa (26.67%), Australis (18.33%) and Icterohaemorrhagiae (13.33%) while in samples from cows suffering from bloody milk examined by MAT percent of seropositivty was 58.9% and the more prevalent Serovars were L. interrogans Serovars Icterhaemorrhagiae (41.1%), Grippotyphosa (25%) , Bataviae (12.5%) and Canicola (10.7%). Evaluation of Lepto Tek Dri Dot against MAT in serodiagnosis of leptospirosis by Kappa statistics showed moderate agreement but Lepto Tek Dri Dot Can’t replace MAT in serodiagnosis of leptospirosis. 15 urine samples were collected from seropositive animals and examined by PCR and found that all samples were positive which indicate that infected animals help in spreading of infection through their infected urine and treatment with ceftiofur and oxytetyracycline reducing shedding of leptospirosis with urine so treatment considered one of the important methods of disease control.
