Abstract

Delayed puberty phenomenon is an important problem that hindering the productivity of buffalo-heifers and it is a multifactor problem. Genetics (breeds) as well as non-genetics factors (i.e. environment, nutrition and management) have a clear role in its occurrence. The most recorded haematological changes associated with this phenomenon are macrocytic hypochromic anemia, changed red cell parameters and decreased TLC, neutrophils and lymphocytes with oesinophilia. Decreased serum progesterone level, glucose, cholesterol, total proteins, albumin, globulins, ceruloplasmin, calcium, P, Zn and Cu concentrations were obvious in delayed heifers with marked changes in oxidant/antioxidant parameters. Vaginal bacterial isolates were higher in delayed pubertal than normal pubertal buffalo-heifers with low incidence of lactobacilli spp. isolation. Prevalence of parasitic infestation was higher in delayed pubertal than normal pubertal buffalo-heifers. Treatment of delayed heifers with GnRH (Receptal®) had a clear curative effect whereas, it established estrous signs within 20-30 days post-injection and induced ovarian activity as monitored by ultrasonography.
