Abstract
Long-acting reversible contraceptive methods are used to delay or avoid pregnancy, premature discontinuation can lead to unplanned pregnancy and unwanted births, which in turn may result in negative public health consequences.The aim of the work is to find the reasons for discontinuation of contraceptive methods at El-Menoufiya Governorate.Subjects And Methods This study was conducted at EL-Menoufiya governorate. At the family planning centers of four urban areas which were: Shebin EL-Kom, Berket EL-Sabei,Quesna and Menouf .The study included five hundred women at the reproductive age (20 – 50)years who are married and using or discontinuing use of any of reversible contraceptive methods The results The results were analyzed and we found that Reasons for Discontinuation Of contraception were due to Not Method Related Such as a desire to get pregnant or no longer being exposed to the risk of pregnancy or Method Related such as, switch,failure or side effects especially menstrual side effects.The conclusion The demographic characteristics of women affect discontinuation, young women, women at higher parity, and women who intend to space rather than limit births are significantly more likely to discontinue than all others, also the education,work and region of residence also affect method discontinuation.The reasons for not using and discontinuation of contraceptive methods can be eliminated by regular and earlier follow up, an effective counseling, earlier management of side effects and elimination of misbelieves regarding religion and contraceptive use for family planning.
