Abstract

Infection control is one of the most important functions a nurse can perform. The aims of this study were to assess nurses’ knowledge and
practice of nurses related to nosocomial infection control in renal dialysis units at Damietta city hospitals. Seventy diploma nurses working in the previously mentioned
setting and were constituted the study sample. Data collection was done
through a questionnaire sheet consisted of 74 items, and observation
checklist used to observe nurses’ practice of infection control measures.
Results of study revealed that, nurses’ age ranged between 22 to 40 years. Also, the majority of studied sample have poor knowledge about present of vaccination against AIDS and hepatitis (C). All of studied sample reported the eye protections and closed foot wears not available in the renal dialysis units, also all of them don’t disinfecting of stethoscope
and near quarter of studied nurses washing their hands between each
patient care. There was a positive correlation between nurses’ knowledge,
and their practice, nurses’ practice and available supplies in dialysis units, and statistically significant correlation between studied nurses’ practice of infection control measures and their years of experience and attendance training courses.
According the study finding the following was recommended pre
and continuous education program and training courses about infection
control should conducted to all nurses working in renal dialysis unit. All
equipment and supplies needed for applying universal precautions should
be available in renal dialysis units.
