Abstract

TNs are common clinical problem. The main goal of evaluating these nodules is to identify nodules with malignant potential The study was conducted on 100 patients with thyroid swelling (21br>males and 79 females) in the period from april 2009 to july 2010 with age distribution from 17 to 83 years . Informed consent was obtained. Preoperative diagnosis in all the patients was established by FNAC.After thyroid surgery, excised tissue was sent for histopathology to confirm the diagnosis.Cytological diagnosis was compared with histological diagnosis to see the accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology for thyroid nodules Ultasonic examination was done for all cases before the procedeur FNA was done for the 100 cases ; 30 case method , 70 case by us guided method .FNA was unsatisfactory in 3 cases . Among the other 97 nodules the FNA revealed 60 to be benign, 8 malignant and 29 showed suspicious results Although thyroid nodules were commoner in females 79%, the majority were found to be benign 74.7%, and there was no significant difference between benign & malignant lesions regarding to age in years among both male & female patients (p value 0.05). It was found that the incidence of malignancy, as regarding to different age groups, was the highest in age group 70 years representing 50% of nodules found in this group and was higher in males (28.6%).
