Abstract

Various options for management of urethral stricture disease are available ranging from urethral dilatation, urethrotomy, urethral stenting, and progressing to anastomotic and substitution urethroplasty.Urethral stents whether removable or permanently implantable are another modality used in opposing the forces of wound contraction after internal urethotomy or dilation In this study 15 patients with recurrent urethral stricture were treated with the Memokath urethral stent. Patient mean age was 52.5±10 years. All cases have bulbar urethral stricture. The aetiology of the stricture was iatrogenic in 6 cases (40%), unknown in 4 cases (27%),inflammatory in 3 cases (20%) and Traumatic in 2 cases (13%).All the stents were inserted successfully and there were no immediate postoperative complications. Appropriate position and function of the stents were noticed in all patients after the procedure.Post-operative complications were recurrent UTI (20%), bleeding per urethra (13%), stent migration (20%). Obstructive symptoms and decreasing urinary flow rate were noted in 47% of the patients due to encrustation (33%) and urethral hyperplasia (14 %).
