Abstract

Population aging or rapid increase in the number of older people is a global phenomenon. Nations are graying as the elderly population is growing much faster than the overall population due to the decreased fertility and increase life expectancy.
As there is no health without mental health. This encouraged the authorities in the worldwide to search for a comprehensive mental health services for all age groups including maternal, child, adult and elderly mental health services.
Egypt was in the forefront of mental health care for many centuries as it has one of the earliest psychiatric hospitals located in Cairo (ElAbasseya hospital).
Unfortunately, there is a major deficiency in the services covering the mental health needs and specially the psychogeriatric needs.
The aim of the study is to review the present mental health services for elderly people in Egypt and provide a preliminary plan for future strategies of elderly mental health program.
This study revealed that there was lack of data about the psychogeriatric disorders, needs and in consequence the services.
Also, there were more weak points in the delivery of the psychogeriatric services including:
• Legislation caring for the respect of elderly rights.
• Lack of financial covering sufficient and precise for the psychogeriatric needs.
• With no good nor well organized referral system between different health sectors for better results possible.
• Non sufficient trained physician, social workers and nurses in psychogeriatric services delivery and management with lack of specialist supervision.
All these factors are considered to be obstacles towards the formation of a comprehensive Egyptian psychogeriatric plan.
Therefore, the elderly in Egypt depends on the informal services, which should be used widely and effectively.
For these reasons, in this project there is a suggestive preliminary plan for the Egyptian elderly mental health services.
