Abstract
In this study 462 patients were presented by intestinal obstruction to the Emergency Unit of Zagazig University Hospitals. The results showed that large bowel obstruction constitutes 7.4% of cases with intestinal obstruction. The colorectal carcinoma includes the majority of cases, especially in older age groups (above 50 years). Males have higher incidence than females and become obstructed due to left sided tumor more than right side. The rectosigmoid region is the commonest area to be obstructed due to malignancy, followed by the ileocaecal region. Annular stricture is the commonest gross picture of tumors obstructing the left side, while cauliflower mass is the commonest one at the right side. The commonest microscopic picture of carcinoma causing obstruction is adenocarcinoma.
