Abstract

Calcium ion is fundamentally important to all biological
systems in our body. Beside being the principle component of teeth
and skeleton, calcium is essential for blood coagulation, muscle
contraction, secretion of digestive enzymes and action of many
hormones.
Hypocalcaemia is defined as total serum calcium below 8.5
mg/dl and ionized hypocalcaemia as ionized calcium level below 3.2
mg/dl,
Hypocalcaemia is a frequent metabolic abnormality seen in
pediatric ICU which may be iatrogenically induced. Also, it may be
due to change in calcium binding due to change in blood pH,
elevation of fatty acids, sepSIS, blood transfusion,
,’”;’;:
hypoalbuminaemia, renal failure and hypomagnaesaemia. All the
previous factors are more likely to be operable in pediatric ICU.
In our study, we try to determine the prevalence of
hypocalcaemia in pediatric leu and how much it is related to
mortality and severity of illness, this in the scope of the association
Summary and conclusion
of some endocrinal changes as parathonnone level and Ca calcitonin
level in the patients.
Our study included 200 patients classified into 3 groups as
follow:
Group (A): Critically ill patients including 100 patients.
Group (B): Non-critically ill control group including 50 patients.
Group (C): Hospitalized but never need admission ICU including
50 patients.
