Abstract

Melasma is a common dermatologic presentation all over the
world. Its management is a challenge. Although its precise cause is
unknown, multiple factors have been implicated III its
aetiopathogenesis of which genetic influences and exposure to
ultraviolet radiation are the most important.
Different clinical patterns of melasma are recognized;
centrofacial, malar and mandibular. Histologically, three subtypes of
melasma have been described; epidermal with the pigment
predominantly in the basal and suprabasal epidermis, dermal with
melanin laden macrophages and mixed type. Despite presence of
variable topical bleaching creams and chemical peeling agents and
laser apparatus, complete eradication of melasma is very difficult.
Dark skin typing of our people, excessive sun exposure. and
expensive sunblockers make the treatment of melasma is difficult.
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of
topical 10% zinc sulfate solution in comparison to Kligman’s
formula in the treatment of melasma.
Fifteen patients with melasma were included in our study. All
ofthem are females. The age ranged from 22 to 45years. The type of
melasma was determined using wood’s light. The patients were
instructed to apply topical 10% zinc sulfate solution on one side of
the face and Kligman’s formula cream on the other side. Both agents
were applied twice daily for 2 months.
