Abstract
This investigation was carried out at the Experimental Orchard of Assiut University during two successive growing seasons; 1988/1989 and 1989/1990. The experiment was an attempt to study the agrobiological characteristics and evaluation of certain local and introduced fig cultivars under Assiut environmental conditions.
Seedling of eight fig cultivars namely; Sultani, Abiad Asswan, Kahramani, Abboudi, Brown Turkey, Conadria, Black Mission and DiRedo were planted in February 1984, on Dlay soil at 3 m. apart. They were headed back to about 50—60 cm from the ground surface. The main branches or scaffold limbs as well as the bearing units of one year old were annually shortened to stubs of 4 buds each until the beginning of this study in February 1988. Ten trees of each cultivar were arranged in a complete random design. They were anually winter pruned to 10 bearing units with 4 buds each.
Growth measurements were made on each replicate
(tree) of each cultivar as follows:
I — Circumference of tree trunk and its annual increment.
2 - Annual net increment of the bearing unit at 3rd. internode.
3 - Weight of winter pruned wood/tree.
