Abstract
— This investigation was carried out at the Experimental Orchard of Assiut University during three successive grow
ing seasons of 1988, 1989 and 1990. The data of 1988 were
used as an index to select trees according their semi—
larity in yield and fruit quality. Thus, the results of
1989 and 1990 seasons were taken in this present study.
Pomegranate growers in Assiut governorate believe that delaying the first irrigation during spring was found to produce good yield of best quality. The author tried to examine the residual effect of date of stopping irrigation during late growing season (after harvesting) in conjunction with date of applying the first irrigation during next spring.
Accordingly, an experiment was set up in a split block design including two levels of soil moistures as main plots, 3 irrigation dates as sub blocks and four replications of one tree each giving a total of 24 trees.
The two irrigation treatments were applied when the soil moisture within the first top foot area was depleted
to60 and 40% of the field capacity. Within each of main irrigation plots, there were 3 irrigation schedules arranged in sub blocks as follows:
