Abstract The traditional system of health care is stated to be the distillation of all human cultures.Traditional practices meet the needs of about 80% of the African population .It is originated from the need of human beings, especially in ancient times, for food and to deal with health problems by using available natural. Facilities. Cultural beliefs and religious background play an important part in formirig the body of knowledge for the traditional system of health care. Causes which make people tend to use these traditional practices are numerous, most of them are related to fear ot disease and death, ignorance which is due to illiteracy and ignorance of the causation of the disease. Many villagers may believe that illness occurs asa result of natural causes like dampness or humidity or- supernatural causes such as an evil eye and God’s will or test for indure.nce and faith. Huenges (1981) reported that nearly 50% of the African population are children, most of them are born healthy but approximately 250 out of every 1000 children born alive die before the age of 5 years.
