Abstract

Breast cancer ranks as the first malignancy affecting females, affecting 1 of 11 women. It has become the most important cause of death in women also presents 30% of all female cancers. So it has received a great deal of concern and has been the focus of intensive study. Recently new trends have developed in surgery aiming at preservation of the breast tissue with nearly the same results as the radical operations. However the success of these conservative procedures demands not only an accurate diagnosis but also a very accurate description of the breast lesion based on imaging modalities of high sensitivity and specificity in discovering cancers and obtaining a reliable pre-surgical evaluation of cancers, hence the importance of ultrasonographic guided core needle biopsy. This study was conducted in Menoufia University Hospital on 50 patients with symptoms and signs suggestive of breast mass, with age ranged between 28 to 65 with mean age of 40 years. All the patients underwent complete history taking, general and local examinations and mammosonographic examination followed by ultrasonographic guided core needle biopsy. In our study, 24 (48%) patients had malignant findings and 26 (52%) patients had benign findings by mammography, while 38 (76%) patients had malignant results and 12 (24%) patients had benign results by biopsy. There was 32 (64%) patients less than 40 years of age, among them 20
(40%) had malignant biopsy results and 12 (24%) had benign results. 18 36%) patients were above 40 years of age all of them had malignant biopsy results.
