المستخلص

The present investigation was carried out at Shandaweel Agric. Res. Stat., Agric. Res. Center, Ministry of Agriculture, during the four summer seasons of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The objective of this investigation was to obtain the best promising lines which will give the high pod yield and yield components by estimate the response of selection in the two populations of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), using pedigree and bulk methods.
The materials used in these studies were two peanut populations as follow:
A- Population I : “ H9 x NC-7 ”.
B- Population II : “ Local x VAC-R92 ”.
The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences between families in the F6 generation at populations I and II for pedigree and bulk selection methods.
Means of the five selected families in the F6 generation revealed that the bulk method was better than pedigree method for flowering date in populations I and II, pod yield/plant, number of pods/plant, number and weight of seeds/plant, 100-pods weight and oil percentage in population I, while pedigree method was better than bulk method for 100-seeds weight and shelling percentage in population I and pod yield/plant, number of seeds/plant, 100-pods weight and 100-seeds weight in population II.
The results revealed that the actual responses to selection were higher than the expected responses to selection for all studied characters at populations I and II in the F6 generation, that is means that the selection obtained genetic gain faster than the expected.
The results revealed that pod yield/plant was high correlated with number of pods/plant, seed weight/plant, number of seeds/plant and 100-pod weight. These results indicated that those characters were controlled by linked genes. The positive or negative correlation values among characters can be used as an indicator for direct or indirect selection method to improve character.
