Abstract

A seismic behavior of steel structures, such as steel columns modeling bridge piers, is very important for the urban transportation network, which became more important after the 1995 Hyogo-ken N anbu great earthquake. The ability of such piers to survive in severe earthquakes depends on their strength and ductility. Stiffened box steel columns have both high strength and large ductility. Until and after the ultimate limit state is reached, stiffened box steel bridge pier exhibits highly nonlinear structural behavior in terms of geometrical and material aspects. In particular, the effects of local buckling, global buckling, and their interaction play a significant role in the resulting consequences of box columns under extreme actions.
Therefore, precise methods are needed to evaluate the performance of stiffened box steel bridge pier under seismic loads. It has already been established that FEM analysis equipped with realistic constitutive law, can accurately predict cyclic and dynamic behavior of thin-walled steel bridge piers; and numerical study has the flexibility advantage
