Abstract Premature rupture of the membranes is defined as spontaneous membrane rupture that occurs before the onset of labor. When spontaneous membrane rupture occurs before 37 weeks gestation and after 20 weeks, it is referred to as preterm PROM. The term latency refers to the time from membrane rupture to onset of labor. Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) complicates approximately 3% of all singleton births but accounts for 30% of neonatal morbidity and mortality among premature gestations. |
