Abstract

Screenhouse and field experiments were carried out on soybean crop during the growth seasons of 1988, 1989 and 1990 to study some environmental factors that affect growth and survival of rhizobia, nodulaion and yield of soybean under Assiut conditions.
The field experiments were conducted in the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Assiut Eight strains of Bradyrhi:zobium. japonicum. and one strain of Rhi:zobium. fr9dii were tested on soybean cultivars (Crawford, Forrest and Clark). The investigation included testing of the following points:
1- Response of soybean cultivars to inoculation with some strains of Bradyrhi:zobium.
2- Effect of high temperature in root media on nodulation of soybean.
3- Growth and survival of rhizobia strains at suboptimal temperature.
4- Persistence of inoculated soybean rhizobia under Assiut field conditions.
5- Effect of planting soybean at different dates on
nodulation, plant growth and yield of soybean.
6- Effect of supplying different levels of nitrogen fertilization to inoculated plants on nodulation and yield of soybean.
Results can be summarized in the following
I
1- Nodulation interactions of tested Bradyrhi:zobium. strains and the cultivars Crawford, Forrest and Clark in both screenhouse and field experiments have shown that Crawford was the most responding cultivar to rhizobia inoculation. This was exhibited in the significantly higher nodulation and increases in % Nand total N in seeds in comparison with the uninoculated control.
