Abstract

Scabies is a highly contagious disease caused by the mite
Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis. The disease is seen in all socioeconomic
groups and communities throughout the world; however, the prevalence
of scabies varies widely from one country to another.
Scabies should be high on the list for urgent attention because it is,
at least theoretically, capable of being eradicated or reduced to negligible
proportions.
Thus, the present study was designed to examine the magnitude of
the problem in rural area and special attention was paid to the sociodemographic
characteristics.
A consent was obtained from the participant or his guardian (if a
child) after full explanation of the study, then a questionnaire was
delivered to each participant to check out sociodemographic data and
then scabitic cases were examined clinically.
The results of this study can be summarized as the following:
Males were more affected with scabies, Young age groups were more
affected, Poorer were more affected,. Disease was associated with poor
sanitary conditions, bad hygienic personal habits, Scabies were more in
more crowded families, Scratching was the most common presenting
symptom, Benzyle benzoate and permethrin were used to eradicate the
disease, Curability was achieved in more than 80% from the first course
of drugs.
