Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBl) is one of the common leading causes of death and disability. br Its annual incidence rate in the USA is about 2 million cases per year. br Severity of the injury is defined on the basis of patients Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score Mild head injury is defined by a score that falls into the 13-15 range; moderate falls into the 9-12 range; and a sever falls into the 0¬8 range. br It has been estimated that 75% of head injuries are of mild severity TBI victims often manifest a multitude of systemic abnormalities secondary to the brain injury, among of which psychiatric comorbidity and impairment in social functioning. br Yet it has been generally ignored by psychiatrist and neurologist. Little is known about the short and long term neurobehavioral consequences of TBl. So the subject is a fertile ground for neuropsychiatry research. br A significant proportion (If patients with mild head injury (34%) had not returned to work 3 months post trauma due to cognitive impairment and other psychiatric disorders. br Depression occurs with sufficient frequency to be considered a significant consequence after TBI. Acute Stress Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders, Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Panic disorders are reported also in patients with mild traumatic brain injury. br The objectives of the study are, to determine the neuropsychiatric sequlae of mild traumatic brain injury patients and to determine the degree of impairment in social and occupational function in these patients br The study included two groups of subjects group (A). br include 19 consecutive adult patients both males and females between the age of 18 and 45 years who were admitted with the diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury. br We exclude patients with moderate and severe trauma or other trauma In the body, patients any neurological deficits and paucnts with past history of psychiatric disorders group (B). twenty healthy volunteers Sex, age, and level of education were matched, as far as possible with the patient group.
