AN ECONOMIC STUDY ON TOMATO CROP IN EGYPT
(CASE STUDY:QENA GOVERNORATE)
SUMMARY
Tomatoes crop is the most important vegetable crop in Egyption Agriculture , It occupies the first place among vegetable. crops with regard to cultivated area , and production . The area of tomatoes in Egypt accounted for about 34.43% of total area of vegetables in Egypt during 1990-2003 period . It’s production amounted to 47.6% of total productions of vegetables .
The main objective of the present study is to determine factors affecting in tomatoes yield in order to reach the optimum production of this crop . The study aims also to improve marketing system of tomatoes and suggests ways in order to overcome tomatoes marketing obstacles .
The study depend mainly on the secondary data either published or not pudlished from the menistry of agriculture, general A uthority for public mobilization and statistics , Food and agriculture Organization ( FAO ) Directorate of the whole saye market El-Aboor in Cairo, El-Nozha in Alexandria . Also the study depended on using descriptive and quantities analysis methods for the statistical data, mathematical approached to estimate trends, reside multiregression analysis to estimate demand response of the crop, the measurements of marketing positions analysis, in addtion to using the statistical indicators to estimate market share and price competition of exports the crop in their main foreign market
The study contains four chapters the first reviews previous studies. The review of literature is divided into four categories; the first contains studies on tomatoes production,
The second chapter showed that there has been annual increase in both tomatoes area and production . Production of tomatoes in Egypt accounted for about 165 % in 2004 of its proddction in 1990
The study showed that the average of tomatoes production in Egypt reached about 5.6 Million tons hrough the period (2000-2003) as an average planted area reached about 404.6 thousand Feddens as an average through the same period . And for the relative importance of the production seasons it was found that the winter season is the main production season. Came in from wher the average of its production reached about 3.1 Million tons , representing 44% the total production through( 2003 ) .summer season whith came at the second place with average of production about 2.7 Million tons, that represent about 39.95% from the total production. And the remaining cent age belongs to the nile season . The Summer season comes at the first plice of the cultivated area which amounted to 17.2 thousand Feaddand representing 44.61 % from the overage of the total planted area during (2003). The winter Season Come at the second place by an average of area amounted to 17.2 thousand feddans representing about 38.03 from the totalaverage planted area, But the nile Season lied at the last place by average of 79 thousand feddanc replanting about 17.36 % from the total average planted area during the same period .
The study showed that the production of tomatoes has increased at annual statistical, significant rate amounted to 124.3 thousand tons .
The production of the summer season has increased at annual rate reached about 114.2 thousand tons, and the annual mar easing rate for the nile season amounted to 7.1 thousand tons.
The study refers to that 65.7% from the production of winter tomatoes concentrated in five governorates which are, qena (18.4 %)Sohag (17% ) (15%) Giza (9.7 %) , Menia (9.6 %)m and Esmeelia (8.8%) as an average of winter production during the preiod (2003) but about 66.3% from the production of the summer season concentrated in Alxandria (15%), El behira (11.1%), Giza (9%), Kafr El Sheakh (5.9%) and Nobaria (24.3%) as an average of the Egyption Republic production in summer season during the priod (2003) also about 15.2% from the Nile production season concentrated in El Foaoun (21.4%) El Nobaria (20.8 %) Giza ( 14.8% ) qena, (11.8%) Beni swif ( 6.4% ) from the total production of the Nile season during the period (2003) .
For the input quanties to El Aboor and el Nozha markets ,the study rebares that the average input quantities to both markets reached about 8.16tons respectively through ( 2000-2004 ), and the seasonal quantity flucruations to El Aboor market reach its maximum in August at seasonal index reached about 153% and its minimum in March at seasonal index reached about 57% but the seasonal quantity fluctuations for el Nozha reached its maximum in March at seasonal index reached about 141 % and its minimum in july at seasonal index reached about82. % .
The study shows that tomatoe processing in egypt has no important role in controlling the egyption tomatoe supply . the amount of tomatoes which have been processed accounted for about 0.84 % of total production through ( 1990 –2003 ) .
The second chapter reveals that there has been an annual increase in both domestic consumption and per capita consumption of tomatoes in egypt in 1990 – 2003 period. It indicated a logical and inelastic response of tomatoe demand to changes in income or price due to small proportion of income assigned to tomatoe consumption .
The action :
In the light of the study results , the following are recommended :
1- to tread marketing and produicing problems which face tomatoes farmerms as general and in qena governrate as particular by staling abox for prices blaance and proled producers srom prices foltering to enable the producer getting high economicrate of relurn which goes with cost of crop producing
2- it must produce crop for mani factoring and exporting and saving the best production ways to grow this crop and assignation places for this producing and it is prefered to be new land which has larg free hold agriculure which has the advantage of larg producing
3- can stant tomatoes agriculture in the areas and govenrale with high producing and work an agriculture in larg producing capacety in that areas and govrenrate
4- Enlering new kinds of lavalaes which go with outside customer throwgh interesting excellence improving which go with measuring specific
5- Saving sources to get producing element espically high producing sels and renitenty illness
6- Facilitating getting grewed to help formers opposite manopolizalion traders in one hand and because of high cost prices of producing on the other hand
7- Stopping on Egyptian expoting dilatory from tomatoes to outside markets espically to Arab country and Europ countries bacause marketes in that contries on encloses larg quanlition of Egyption tomatoes and trying to over come this dilatony
8- It must working to increase efficacy the role of agriculture guidingas for doing differenl agriculture processes espically that concarn with stopping the use of insectacid and chemical lreating as to save clean producing without remaining insectacid and getting high excellency production with discriptions go with world and local needs .
