Aims of the Study: The present study aimed at-Preparing a list of age appropriate language skills for Preschoolers.
2- Identifying how far preschoolers have language skills.
3- Identifying the effect of Bilingualism on the preschoolers’ acquisition of some language skills and the appropriate age for teaching foreign languages.
The study Sample and Tools:
The study sample comprised eighty male and female children with mean age ranging from 5 to 6 years old. The study sample was further divided into two sub-groups; a control group that was only taught in Arabic and comprised (40) male and female children randomly selected out of Al-Gamaa co school, and an experimental one that was taught both in Arabic and in English and comprised (40) male and female children selected also randomly out of Badr Language School, and studied two subjects, Science Activities and Mathematics, in English.
Tools of the study were prepared and they were represented in: (1)A list of Arabic Language skills appropriate to pre-school children, (2)Two Language Situations Tests in listening and speaking skills; (3) Two Observation Sheets for observing children’s performance in the two situations tests. By implementing the tools of the study, and by using the appropriate statistical formulae, the results of the study were obtained.
The Study Results:
The following results have been concluded out of the present research:
1. Reaching a list of the Arabic language skills appropriate to pre-school children.
2. There are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of both of the two groups (the control and the experimental groups) in the acquisition of language skills under study, listening skills. Speaking skills at the level of (0.01) in favour of the control group.
3. Bilingualism negatively affects the pre-school children’s acquisition of: language skills under investigation, listening skills, speaking skills with a high effect size in all of them.
